EM-Darts ends for Van Gerwen in the first round
Darter Michael van Gerwen got stuck in the first round at the European Championships in Dortmund. The 33-year-old from Brabant lost 6-5 to Chris Dobey from England.
Van Gerwen, who had won the last two major tournaments and defeated Dobey at the World Grand Prix earlier this month, quickly found himself 4-2 down on Friday night.
The Dutchman had not lost to Dobey in the previous eleven games and probably fought his way back to a 5-4 lead with this thought.
Because he did so with a nice 160 finish at 5-4, Dobey seemed ripe for the carnage. The English world No. 26 straightened up, threw 180 twice in the deciding leg and clinched victory with his first match dart.
The day before, Vincent van der Voort and Danny Noppert managed to survive the first lap. Van der Voort (PDC-27) recorded a great win over fifth seed Damon Heta (6-2). De Fries Noppert won 6:3 against Englishman Andrew Gilding. The two Dutchmen will meet in the second round on Saturday.
Dirk van Duijvenbode is the fourth Dutchman to attend Dortmund and also won his first game on Thursday. He defeated Let Madars Razma 6-3. If Van Duijvenbode defeats James Wade in the second round on Saturday, he will play against the winner of the match between Van der Voort and Noppert.
Welshman Gerwyn Price surprisingly lost in the first round to Austrian Rowby-John Rodriguez. As a result, there will be no second-round meeting between Price, the 2021 world champion, and Peter Wright, this year’s world champion.
