The investigation in the Inselspital in Bern provides certainty: Marlen Reusser will be out for weeks. The best Swiss cyclist suffered more than just a broken jaw during the Tour of Flanders. No, eight teeth are also broken and both ear canals are broken. Reusser will undergo surgery on Tuesday morning and will have to wear splints for about four weeks.

“I am doing well and I am confident that I will be healthy again soon,” said the three-time European time trial champion. Reusser fell ten kilometers after the start in Belgium on Sunday. The TV footage showed her sitting on a fence with her left hand covering her mouth. “A driver fell in front of me and I had no chance to avoid him,” she says.

The Olympic Games and the World Cup are probably not in danger

The injury is a setback for Reusser. However, their two major goals should not be jeopardized: the Olympic Games in Paris (July 26 to August 11) and the home world championship in Zurich (August 26 to September 1).

In both title fights, Reusser has the class to aim for gold in the time trial. She has already won the silver medal in both competitions. There is a good chance that, if healing progresses well, she will be able to start training on the roller again at some point.

Küng also broke his jaw

In 2018, Stefan Küng (30) also suffered a broken jaw during Paris-Roubaix. At the time, he had to take a break for more than six weeks before he could start racing again. What was especially difficult was that for a while he could only eat soft and liquid food. It is possible that Reusser will experience a similar situation.

The Thurgau man also fell during the Tour of Flanders on Sunday – also through no fault of his own. Although he finished the race, his left knee hurt. But everything indicates that he will start in the “Hell of the North” next Sunday.
