Basel sleepy heads: FCB coach Celestini cannot wake up his players

There is something almost masochistic about taking a seat in the stadium or in front of the TV as an FCB fan just in time for kick-off. No team currently misses the start of a match as often as Basel. The disastrous record of the last five games: seven goals conceded in the starting phase, four times the team from Basel were 0-1 behind after the 9th minute at the latest.

That was also the case in the 2-2 draw in the classic against FCZ. “We wanted to start with fire and be dominant from the start,” Fabio Celestini said after the match. “But the exact opposite happened!”

This time his players are asleep after a corner in the 6th minute, the incoming Kamberi is able to head in almost unchallenged and give the FCZ an early lead. And this despite the fact that Celestini had analyzed exactly this situation with his team in advance. “We knew they would try to keep us out of corners. Then we concede a goal like that,” says the Lausanne man angrily.

Even classic videos can’t wake up FCB players

But that’s not all: Basel’s second goal after half-time also came from a corner – just eight minutes after the restart. But why is it that FCB repeatedly comes out of the dressing room so sleepy? “The team is just very vulnerable at the moment,” says Celestini. “There is a lack of conviction and energy.”

To awaken these things in his team, the FCB coach has tried all kinds of things in recent weeks. “We showed the players a video before the match to get them in the mood for the classic,” says Celestini. “It’s important that we know what this game means to our fans.” But he doesn’t seem to really get through to his players yet.

Celestini: “Every point is important”

That is why it is not enough to beat the unpopular rivals from Zurich in the third game of the season. Celestini can live with the draw due to the double false start: “In our situation, every point is important. And if you can’t win, you certainly can’t lose.”

In the battle against barrage fear, FCB will continue against Lugano on Tuesday. Will the people of Basel be involved from the start? In the last game in the quarter-finals of the cup (3:4 nP) at the end of February, the team from Ticino was already 2-0 ahead after fifteen minutes.
