On Saturday evening, Borussia Dortmund will play the top match against Bayern Munich – away at the Allianz Arena (live on Blick from 6.30 pm). It won’t be an easy away trip as BVB have had nothing to gain from their previous games in Munich.

The balance is devastating: recently Borussia suffered nine Bundesliga defeats in a row against Bayern, conceding a total of 37 (!) goals and only scoring eight. BVB celebrated their last success in Munich at the end of April 2017 in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup (3-2 win). In the Bundesliga, the last away win against the reigning national champions was even longer ago: more than ten years ago! On April 12, 2014, the number two defeated Bayern 3-0.

“We want to leave the field as winners”

If Borussia coach Edin Terzic (41) has his way, this dark series must finally come to an end. ‘It was just about time. Our goal is to go to Munich and finally turn things around and leave the field as winners,” Terzic said at the pre-match press conference. To achieve this, his team must “act courageously, remain diligent at every stage of the game and demonstrate great efficiency and resilience”.

The 41-year-old is aware that the statistics do not exactly speak for his team. “Bayern always shows its best face against us.” The result in the first leg in Dortmund was clear: Bayern won the match 4-0 last autumn. “We must now draw the right conclusions from this,” Terzic demands of his team and staff.

“Do not allow slip-ups”

BVB urgently need to score points, because a defeat would put them in great danger of slipping out of the Champions League places. Dortmund, in fourth place, is just one point ahead of Leipzig. And after the guest appearance in Munich, there is still a tough program on the program with the matches against the top teams Stuttgart, Leverkusen and their rivals Leipzig.

“We can’t afford any more mistakes, no matter how strong the opponent is,” says Terzic, looking at the table. The coach will have to make do without several regular players for the match in Munich. Particularly bitter is the loss of BVB’s second best goalscorer Donyell Malen (thigh injury).

Suspended midfielder Marcel Sabitzer and full-back Ramy Bensebaini are also missing due to an inner ligament injury – the latter is likely to be out for the entire season. Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel will also miss the classic against Bayern Munich due to a gastrointestinal infection.
