The organizers of the Zermatt ski races can announce good news on Saturday: Although all planned competitions on the Gran Becca have been canceled over the past two years, they have been able to reach an important deal with the insurance companies. In concrete terms, this means: “A few days ago we found a solution on how to insure a new outage. “Organizationally speaking, the traffic light is green,” Diegoüger, CEO of Swiss Ski, explains to Blick.

But just one day later the bad news comes. If President of the World Federation Johan Eliasch (62) has his way, Zermatt will no longer have a place on the racing calendar for the next World Cup.

New review in a year

The countries were informed about the explosion during the team captains meeting on Saturday evening. They therefore want to postpone the races on the Italian-Swiss border for a year in the winter of 2024/25 and then reassess. “FIS boss Johan Eliasch has informed us about the suspension of the competitions in Zermatt,” ÖSV men’s head coach Marko Pfeifer (50) confirmed to Blick.

The cancellation of the races in Zermatt would be the latest chapter in a frustrating ski story. The repeated cancellations have also been followed by driver resentment in recent weeks. They are not fundamentally against Zermatt-Cervinia as a location. Above all, planning in November was not a good choice.

Now Eliasch wants to pull the cord completely – at least for a year.

There remains a small glimmer of hope

There is now little hope for those responsible for the races in Zermatt. The final calendar decision will be made on June 5 in Reykjavik, Iceland, during the FIS Congress.

If the races in Zermatt are suspended, the start of the next World Cup season would look like this: The start – almost traditionally – in Sölden (Austria) with a slalom and a giant slalom for men and women. This is followed by a slalom in Levi (Fin) and a slalom weekend in Gurgl (Austria) before heading to North America.
