Ticino artistic gymnast Lena Bickel will not participate in the European Championships in Rimini, Italy, at the beginning of May.

The 19-year-old is still recovering from muscle problems late last year. A European Championship start would come too early, the exemption is a precautionary measure, according to a press release from the Swiss Gymnastics Federation.

Lena Bickel secured Switzerland a quota place for the Olympic Games at the World Cup in Antwerp last October. She doesn’t want to take any risks when it comes to participating in Paris this summer. Also not available for a possible European Championship selection is Bickel’s teammate Caterina Cereghetti, who has to take a several weeks break due to a foot injury. (SDA/dti)
