It was 1:20 PM when a cloudburst fell at the slalom start at 1,260 meters. “Rain and skiing – that hurts me,” says Michelle Gisin (30) a short time later at the finish. She can live with 10th place. “The slope is not really steep, but not flat either. “That’s not my thing in these soft, greasy, salty conditions,” she says.

After all, she finished the slalom season in fourth place. She is already looking forward to the Football World Cup at the same location next February. “Then hopefully we will be driving on bare ice,” says Gisin, smiling.

“I still have a lot of potential”

The best Swiss woman is Camille Rast (24) in eighth place. She can do more with the miserable conditions in Saalbach than Gisin. “I like when things are difficult – it takes me out of my comfort zone,” says Rast. She improved by four places in the second run and, like Gisin, can look back on a good slalom season: she finished fourth twice.

Above all, for the first time she has had a season without any problems: no glandular fever, no physical problems, no material problems. ‘I learned a lot about myself. There used to be ups and downs, but now I am more patient and handle everything better. And I still have a lot of potential.”

After comeback: Shiffrin wins again

The victory (number 97) and the slalom ball (number 8) go to Mikaela Shiffrin (28, USA). “Next year I will do everything I can to compete for the overall World Cup again,” she announces. This will probably go to Lara Gut-Behrami (32) this winter. Will the Ticino resident stay in Saalbach from Sunday until a week for the ball photo with Marco Odermatt (26)? Swiss-Ski expects her to leave on Saturday evening after the last women’s race of the winter.
