Super League coaching barometer: where’s the bang? Where is it quiet?

FC Basel sets a good example! Of all the places where six (!) coaches have given each other the doorknob in the past three years, the contract with Fabio Celestini is being extended. Despite the cup-out and bitter setbacks in the relegation battle – most recently a 1:5 defeat against YB.

Other coaches cannot be as confident as Celestini when it comes to crisis clubs. A glance shows where there is a risk of explosion.

The international breakthrough is imminent and the rankings are in crisis. Based on his form and results, he is the top contender for the barrage. A poisonous mixture for trainer Bruno Berner (46). He doesn’t think his job is in danger. But it is much more likely that if the Hoppers also lose the home game against St. Gallen, the patience of the new American owners will probably come to an end.

There is a lot of confidence in Mario Frick (contract until 2026) in Lucerne, despite four defeats in the last five games. Still. The danger of explosion will increase if the next matches are lost and the Central Swiss team suddenly finds itself in a relegation battle. What will happen in the summer between the FCL and Frick (49) is another piece of paper: there are more and more voices that the coach is looking for a new job.

In January, Matthias Hüppi (65) showed that he can make difficult decisions by sending his old companion Alain Sutter (56) out of the country. The fact that the FCSG boss describes qualification for the Champions Group as “imperative” puts pressure on Peter Zeidler (61). Still, the coach is unlikely to be fired. Because after Sutter you would soon lose a second proven football expert. And then the chance of a total crash is probably too great.

The rest of the competition will remain quiet on a coaching level, at least until the summer holidays. Or as in the case of YB and FC Zurich: There has already been a bang in recent weeks! A permanent successor to Raphael Wicky is being sought in Bern, until then U21 coach Joël Magnin has taken over. At the FCZ, the duo Murat Ural/Umberto Romano will remain in charge until the heir Henriksen is installed.

The situation at Lausanne-Sport is somewhat surprising: despite well-known winter signings and a team that can do more than fight for relegation, Ludovic Magnin is safely in the saddle. Because there is no sports director who holds a mirror up to the coach. In other words: in the current constellation, Magnin can stay in Lausanne as long as he wants. Even when relegated.
