The fuss surrounding the disqualified Maelle Veyre (21) is getting an unexpected new chapter. The Frenchwoman is now – five days after the Engadine Ski Marathon – once again the winner of the cross-country skiing classic.

The French World Cup athlete crossed the finish line with a minute lead on Sunday. But when they checked their skis, they were disqualified: the level of the banned fluorine wax was too high. Local Giuliana Werro (24) inherited Veyre’s victory. But now Werro has achieved her second Engadin triumph of her career.

Three of the twelve disqualifications are invalid

The reason: the World Ski Association FIS returns due to an error in the so-called “Fluorine Test Protocol”. The jury was given incorrect information when making the disqualification decision, which reversed Veyre’s exclusion.

What a mess of fluorine. Due to the twelve fluoro disqualifications, not only the winner but also two men, the process did not proceed correctly. They are also being rehabilitated.

For the organizers, reporting to the FIS is a real nightmare. Because the ski marathon was not obliged to implement the fluorine ban that has been in force at the World Cup since this winter. And now we are in trouble because of the voluntarily introduced passage.

OK boss and SRF expert Adriano Iseppi told Blick: “We wanted to guarantee fair competition and support the FIS with the fluorine ban. Now we must conclude that there was a problem with three of the skis that tested positive. This is very unfortunate for us.”

The FIS botched its own fluorine tests

The fluorine tests at the finish were carried out by the world association, but something went wrong. What remains unclear. The FIS has not yet responded to Blick’s request.

It is also a mystery for Iseppi. “The FIS has been carrying out fluorine tests all winter and now there are said to be uncertainties. I also continue to have questions.”

It’s not just unclear what went wrong with the tests. But also whether Veyre’s testing device incorrectly indicated fluorine content – or whether she won with skis that did not meet the rules and is now getting away with it due to bureaucratic errors. One thing is clear: the Engadine starting ban for 2025 and 2026 that was announced after the disqualification has expired, Veyre can start again next year.
