This year’s DFB Cup season is going absolutely crazy. There is also – involuntarily – a Swiss in the middle. Mönchengladbach coach Gerardo Seoane (45) and his team are the third Bundesliga club, after Bayern and Frankfurt, to fail on Tuesday evening against third division club FC Saarbrücken.
Learning something from the record champions can often be a promising approach. From Gladbach’s point of view, however, they would have liked to avoid being knocked out 2-1 after taking the lead in stoppage time – as Bayern did in November.
A huge opportunity missed

Certain Gladbach supporters also need emotional control. After the final whistle, several dozen fans broke into the stadium and confronted their team – fortunately the scene did not escalate. However, Gladbach manager Roland Virkus (57) understands the fans. “I come from Gladbach and can understand every percent of the fans’ anger,” he told “Bild” on Wednesday. The boss also holds coach Seoane responsible: “We can’t let that happen to us if we don’t think of anything against such an opponent and then blindly counterattack. I now expect answers from the technical staff.”
Leverkusen is the only team from the Bundesliga
Thanks to the Saarbrücken Cup sensation, three lower division teams are in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup this year – something that has never happened before. In three weeks, Saarbrücken will face Kaiserslautern, while Leverkusen will host Fortuna from Düsseldorf. Naturally, given this starting position, only the title for the Bundesliga leader around Nati captain Granit Xhaka (31) counts in the cup.
