Countless top skiers have been injured this winter. This also applies to the two toughest competitors of Marco Odermatt (26) at the time of her fall in the battle for the overall World Cup. Marco Schwarz (28) tore his cruciate ligament at the end of December and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (31) suffered a deep cut in his calf and dislocated his shoulder in mid-January.

Both are in the middle of rehabilitation – with different starting points. They make this clear as guests in the show ‘Sport and Talk from Hangar-7’.

“I’m standing, that’s a start,” says Kilde. Most recently he was in a wheelchair for seven weeks and dependent on assistance for everything. It was not an easy time; he had difficulty looking positively ahead. Possibly also because he made the wrong decision.

“The program was just too much”

‘I was sick before. It was a mistake on my part to start,” Kilde admits. But after the podium finishes of the previous two days, he wanted to win. “The program was just too much. You can see I had no strength left.”

While Kilde still occasionally thinks about his fall, Schwarz has put his aside. “I have never hesitated and I am happy with this positive attitude,” he says. And looks optimistically to the future and the World Cup at home in 2025. Things look different at Kilde.

Girlfriend as great motivation

It is unclear whether he will return at all. An injured nerve in the leg causes problems. “I can reach with my toes, but I can’t move them up,” Kilde explains. “The big toe hangs like a jellyfish.” But he is confident that things will get better.

Also because her friend Mikaela Shiffrin (28) is a great motivation. She was recently injured and returned to the World Cup with a victory. “It’s incredible,” says Kilde enthusiastically. And emphasizes: “I know how deep she was.” Not only because an inner tube injury is serious for a skier, but also because she had to write off the overall World Cup.

More safety for athletes

Kilde and Schwarz want to improve safety in their sport. For Kilde, cut-resistant underwear is suddenly a big problem. Black goes further and demands that it be mandatory. Finally, the airbag requirement will also be introduced next season. But that’s not the only thing that needs to change.

If you do all disciplines, the calendar is very busy, says Schwarz. “You have to find a way to make up for canceled races.” And Kilde adds that everything around it also needs to be adjusted. With the starting number draw, prize giving and other events, there is not enough time to relax in the evening.

The only thing the two currently have to recover from is their rigorous rehabilitation program. They want to go full throttle in the near future. And step by step closer to their comeback. (beer)
