Despite the cup result and four bankruptcies in the last five league games: Fabio Celestini (48) will probably also be on the sidelines at FCB next season. According to information from Blick, there is fundamental agreement within the Basel sports commission that the coach’s expiring contract should be extended.

The fact that the official report took a long time probably mainly has to do with Celestini himself. According to FCB boss David Degen, the coach wants a team with which he can play for the titles in time. Not only after the 1:5 against YB, Celestini doubted whether this would be possible with this team after the summer break.

Celestini only wanted a contract until 2024

Yet there are many indications that the collaboration between FCB and Romand will continue. “We agree absolutely on everything. There will be news soon,” Celestini himself promised last week.

If those responsible in Basel had their way, they would have given Celestini a longer-term working document when he took office last October. At the time, the Lausanne native only wanted to sign a contract until the end of the season and recommend himself for a new contract with good performances.

The Basel coach succeeded. The seven-member (!) FCB sports committee is convinced of a further common path. After five coaching changes in David Degen’s (41) three-year term, consistency should finally return.

Agreement between Degen, Streller and Stocker

In addition to board chairman Degen, another board member, Andy Rey, is part of the sports committee. In addition, there are the two former FCB professionals Marco Streller (42) and Valentin Stocker (34). Ex-sports director Streller has been working at FCB as a ‘partner manager’ in the sales department since 2021. Stocker is currently studying and, according to the official plan, will one day take on the role of sporting director at FCB.

The other members are Daniel Stucki (42), Ruedi Zbinden (64) and Martin Andermatt (62). Ex-FCZ professional Stucki has been head of the FCB youth department since April 2023, previously working as head of the back office and police officer. Zbinden has been at the heart of Basel’s scouting department for more than 20 years, and in addition to his various coaching positions, Andermatt was a member of the supervisory board of Hannover 96 for several years.

Now that there has been agreement on the coaching issue, it is now up to the seven sports committee members to provide Celestini with a team that will no longer fight against relegation next season. That will be difficult enough, we don’t have to look for a new coach.
