Eva Lys makes her rheumatic autoimmune disease public on Instagram.

Eva Lys (22) repeatedly caused guesswork with several tournament cancellations. The German tennis candidate has now revealed on Instagram that she is suffering from serious health problems and has therefore had to miss one or two tournaments.

As Lys reveals, in 2020 she was diagnosed with spondyloarthritis, an autoimmune rheumatic disease that causes her joints and spine to become inflamed, which can cause severe pain and severely impact her quality of life and career.

“This is a physical challenge that I have to deal with every day in addition to the physical strain,” said number 146 in the world rankings. “Thanks to the great support and treatment from my medical team, I can still pursue my sporting dream and get the best out of myself,” Lys continues.

Passion for sports as motivation

Due to her illness, she is occasionally forced to change and adjust her tournament schedule at short notice. So far this year, the 22-year-old has only competed in the WTA 125 tournament in Canberra, the Australia Open and most recently the WTA 1000 tournament in Dubai in February. Last Wednesday she had to cancel her participation in the ITF tournament in Slovakia at short notice.

Despite the circumstances, Lys is combative and shows up at her post in a hospital bed with a cannula in her arm. “During my sports career, I was often told from outside that I was too weak for this. The stronger it made me. I am convinced that my passion for sports will continue to drive me,” the Ukrainian-born promises her followers. It is still unclear when she will be back on the tennis court. (mbi)
