Frei calls for a relegation battle for sleepy FCB: Frei: ‘Feel free to explain that to a player again’

The city of Basel is not known for its watch industry. A working alarm clock could be found somewhere in the Rhine bend. Because against YB, FCB completely missed the start of a match for the third time in a row.

After 16 minutes it is 0:3 from the perspective of Basel in Wankdorf. In the cup match against Lugano, FCB slept after kick-off and was 2-0 after fifteen minutes. Last weekend, the Bebbi conceded their first goal against Lausanne-Sport in the 9th minute.

“We weren’t ready for it”

Less than two minutes had been played in Bern when it was scored for the first time behind Hitz. Monteiro benefits from a failed Barry defense. Shortly afterwards, Itten doubled over with his head. “Two standards where we are not close enough to the people,” summarizes FCB captain Fabian Frei. With Bern’s third goal, the match was over after more than fifteen minutes. Three goals conceded in 16 minutes. From FCB’s perspective, this hasn’t happened in the league since 1999.

‘I have no explanation. We just weren’t ready for it,” says Frei. After the match, his coach Fabio Celestini spoke about the worst match under his leadership. ‘There’s not much to say about it. After 16 minutes the match was over,” said the FCB coach.

“Then it’s the coach’s fault”

Celestini quickly identified the culprit of the defeat. But the fault is not one of his inferior defenders, but himself. Celestini: “If nothing works, like today, then it’s the coach’s fault.” Analyzing the game doesn’t help much. “But we have to think about what we did wrong this week and what needs to change next week,” said the FCB coach.

Despite self-criticism, Celestini also holds his team accountable. “You can imagine what the coach said during the break. He wasn’t as friendly as usual,” Frei said of his coach’s speech during the break.

However, this has no effect whatsoever. Just seconds after the restart, YB left back Hadjam made it 4-0, and Monteiro scored Bern’s fifth goal with a dream goal. The fact that FCB got a consolation goal from Barry was thanks to a goal from Camara.

“It’s heading for relegation”

The only good news for FCB is that Lausanne also lost to Servette two hours earlier. However, the situation in the table cellar has not become more comfortable. Especially because the team from Basel now also has a significantly worse goal difference (-11) than their relegation rivals Lausanne (-7) and standings (-3).

“It must be clear to everyone that we are heading towards relegation,” Frei once again sounds the alarm. “If a player feels like I have to explain it to him again, I’m happy to do so.”

And Celestini also says: “The barrage and the relegation zone have been in my head since my first day in Basel.” So the coach knows what happened. Only his players don’t seem to have heard the alarm anymore.
