Carlos Sainz is suffering from appendicitis.

Not good news for Ferrari. Carlos Sainz (29, two GP victories) missed the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix due to appendicitis. The Spaniard must undergo surgery in hospital. The Italian racing team reported this on Friday.

Sainz, who finished third in the first race of the season in Bahrain, complained on Wednesday that he was not feeling well. He then returned to the hotel from the route and was unable to attend media engagements. But he still took part in the second training on Thursday.

Sainz is replaced by Oliver Bearman (18). The British reserve driver is currently active in Formula 2. There he has so far achieved three victories in 24 starts and reached the podium six times. Saturday’s race (6 p.m.) in Jeddah will be his Formula 1 debut. He would have been on pole position for Saturday’s Formula 2 race, but will not start there. (bjl)
