Relegation group would be a test for the nerves: Basel’s terrible record against the basement teams

Just imagine this: if FC Basel had won all eight games against the cellar trio GC, Lausanne-Sport and Lausanne-Ouchy this season, Celestini’s team would be at the top of the Super League table! Even in their most dominant years, Basel probably wouldn’t have scored all 24 possible points. However, only half of that would still be enough for third place in the rankings.

Will they ever mourn Wicky in Bern, like Fischer in Basel?

Will they one day mourn Wicky like Fischer did at FCB?

But FCB is miles away from that. In the eight games against GC (3 games), Lausanne-Sport (3 games) and Lausanne-Ouchy (2 games), the team from Basel lost seven times. The only point came in the dismal 1-1 draw against the bottom team at the beginning of December.

Celestini has a statement ready

It is all the more bitter for the Bebbi that they can finally give up the jump to the Champions Group after the 1-2 home defeat against Lausanne-Sport. And now we have to play in the relegation group again against all three feared opponents.

But why is it that FCB is having such a hard time against the teams at the bottom of the table? “Maybe the pressure is greater because the team knows that they actually have to win these matches,” coach Fabio Celestini (48) tries to explain the poor result.

YB as favorite opponent

There is no doubt that Celestini’s team can play successful football. The FCB under the Vaudois always puts in strong performances against the teams from the top half of the table. The Basel team scored 24 of their 31 points against top 7 teams.

Ultimately, the effectively steep remaining schedule until the league is halved could even be beneficial for FCB. With the exception of St. Gallen, Basel can play any team from the top half of the rankings. First on Sunday is Leader YB. In contrast to the Keller trio, FCB has already won once against the Berners.
