You don’t have to be a particularly good character expert to see what is going on with Mario Frick (49) early on Sunday evening. The FCL coach stands in front of the microphones with narrowed eyes and thin lips. The pulse beats under his temples.

His speech during the break was probably anything but reverent. Lucerne trailed 0-1 against Lugano at halftime. Luzern’s Austrian striker Adrian Grbic (27) summarizes the first 45 minutes as follows: “They tore us apart. We just went after it.”

Frick wanted a shocking moment

Lugano coach Mattia Croci-Torti (41) speaks of a “weird match”. “We expected Lucerne to be much more aggressive.” After a lightning start with a missed offside goal by Pius Dorn (27) in the 3rd minute, the team from Lucerne completely lost its way. There is mistake after mistake. Lugano plays an easy match and leads at half time.

For the two attacking players Max Meyer (28) and Sofyan Chader (23) it is time for work during the break. Frick: “It took a moment of shock. I didn’t like her body language. We were too flawed and always threw our hands away. It was “a bloodless performance” in the first 45 minutes, Frick says.

In the second half Lucerne came into the match better and also had opportunities. Lugano keeper Amir Saipi (23) made two good saves. But against the experienced Ticino team, the young people from Lucerne sometimes seem like a junior team. Or as Frick puts it: “You could see the difference today – Lugano is a top team, we want to be that.”

Even against SLO that is not enough

Frick was asked if he had an explanation for his team’s lack of performance in the opening 45 minutes. “Let’s see what excuse the team has during the first training of the week. They are always very imaginative.”

Next Sunday, Lucerne will play against bottom team Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy. Here too, a performance like Sunday’s against Lugano will hardly be enough for three points.
