This comes as a surprise. Last Friday, Swiss referee Esther Staubli (44) led the semi-final of the Nations League for women between France and Germany. Three days later, the association announced her immediate resignation in a press release.
«With the match between France and Germany, my work as a referee comes to an end with one last international highlight. By participating in the Nations League final I was able to realize one last dream,” says Esther Staubli. “That is why I have decided to take a new path and end my career as an active referee.”
Managed several Super League matches
Considered a refereeing pioneer in Switzerland, Staubli has competed in three consecutive Women’s World Cups and was the first Swiss woman to referee a senior men’s international match (Sweden versus Azerbaijan in November 2023). The 44-year-old refereed eleven games in the Super League this season. There were a total of 27 in her career. She recently had two world stars dancing to her tune in a friendly match between Al-Nassr (with Cristiano Ronaldo) and Inter Miami (with Lionel Messi).
“What Esther Staubli has done for the Swiss referees can hardly be put into words,” praises referee boss Sascha Amhof (43) and says: “We take her decision in the year preceding the Women’s European Championship in Switzerland with the greatest regret. . that has been noted.” (par)
