Martin Steinegger is an excellent sports director. How he formed a top team at EHC Biel with many smart decisions without a large wallet deserves the highest respect. But with Petri Matikainen, Steinegger made a fatal mistake for once.
Steinegger became a bit cocky when he was given the difficult task of replacing successful coach Antti Törmänen last spring. And with Matikainen he hired the opposite of popular figure and buddy coach Törmänen. A coach from the oldest school who always seems grumpy. An anti-anti.
Steinegger consciously wanted the post-Törmänen era to be less of an oasis of well-being and more of discipline and order. Completely understandable. But he overdid it. Instead of a 180 degree rotation, 90 degrees would have been better.
