The Swiss epee fencers took fourth place in the team competition at the traditional World Cup in Heidenheim. However, much more would have been possible. In the semi-final against Japan, they were apparently ahead by 20:14 after six out of nine games, but ultimately had to admit defeat by 31:32. In the battle for third place, the team lost to world number two, France, in 34:37.
Still, it’s a good day for Switzerland in the battle for one of only eight Olympic tickets. The Czech Republic, which was directly ahead of the Swiss in the decisive ranking before Heidenheim, failed in the quarter-finals and only finished in 7th place. Switzerland’s first pursuers, Spain and Germany, are even more clearly in eleventh and fifteenth place.
There is only one more World Cup to go before the qualifying period ends, in Tbilisi in mid-March. (SDA/mbi)
