Wilson Fittipaldi has passed away.

Sad news from Formula 1. Former racing driver Wilson Fittipaldi died on Friday. The Brazilian was 80 years old.

Particularly tragic: Fittipaldi received medical treatment after an incident at his birthday party. To mark this occasion, a banquet was held on December 25. Fittipaldi choked on a piece of meat, suffered a choking attack and subsequently suffered cardiac arrest. He has now died after a long stay in hospital.

“It is with great sadness that the Brazilian Automobile Association learns of the death of Wilson Fittipaldi Jr. on Friday, February 23 in the city of São Paulo after 60 days of hospitalization,” the Brazilian Automobile Association said. He fell asleep forever in his homeland ‘peacefully and surrounded by all the love he had earned all his life’.

First brother duo in Formula 1

Fittipaldi took part in 35 Formula 1 races and scored three championship points. His younger brother Emerson Fittipaldi (77) was much more successful. He became world champion twice: in 1972 as the youngest driver in history and in 1974. He won 14 of his 144 races (a total of 35 podium places).

The two were the first brothers to start a Formula 1 race together. This premiere took place in May 1972 during the Spanish GP when Wilson Fittipaldi was allowed to fill in for the injured Carlos Reutemann (1942-2021). To date, besides Ralf (48) and Michael Schumacher (55), they are also the only pair of brothers to finish in the points in the same GP. (beer)
