Servette will face Viktoria Pilsen in the eighth finals of the Conference League. For the team from Geneva it is the first meeting with the six-time Czech champion.
Before Servette, there were certainly bigger names in the draw than Pilsen. But no one in Geneva will underestimate the Czechs. The Eastern Europeans were the only team to finish the group stage of the Conference League with six wins from six games. However, in the domestic championship the team is only in third place, 14 points behind leader Sparta Prague.
The first leg will take place on March 7 in Geneva, the second leg a week later in the Czech Republic. The Grenats do not have fond memories of Czech teams. They only managed to win two of the thirteen matches. This season they suffered a 2-0 and 4-0 defeat against Slavia Prague in the group stages of the Europa League.
In the round of 16 for the first time in 22 years
Servette made progress on Thursday evening with a 1-0 win over Bulgarian champions Ludogorets Razgrad. The last time the Genevans were represented in Europe this late in the season was 22 years ago. At the time, they failed in the round of 16 of the UEFA Cup, the predecessor of the Europa League, against Valencia.
The team from Geneva only advanced one round in the European Cup twice. In 1967 they failed in the European Cup II against Slavia Sofia and in 1979 in the same competition against Fortuna Düsseldorf.
Quick farewell for Xhaka
For Leverkusen there is a quick reunion with a group opponent. The Bundesliga leaders will face Karabakh Agdam in the round of 16. Karabakh “played a good play-off round against Braga. We have to take them very seriously and remain as focused as before,” says Leverkusen director Fernando Carro. “It’s a long journey, but we’re looking forward to the round of 16.”
Leverkusen travel to Azerbaijan for the first leg on March 7, and a week later the Werkself will have home advantage in the second leg (March 14). The final will take place on May 22 in the Irish capital Dublin. (SDA/AFP)
Servette has to go to the Czech Republic
Servette is the first team to discover its opponent in the round of 16. Viktoria Pilsen is signed. Considering the crashes that could have loomed, this was certainly an achievable task for the people of Geneva. They first play at home on March 7 and a week later they play away.
