Now starting for Switzerland: Helen Bekele, who took part in the Escalade Race in Geneva last December.

The naturalization process for long-distance runner Helen Bekele, who has lived in Switzerland since 2016 and is married to a Swiss man, has been completed. This means that the native Ethiopian is now entitled to titles and records in Switzerland.

The 29-year-old athlete from Stade Genève has repeatedly shown excellent performances in competitions at home and abroad in recent years. For example, at the 2023 Berlin Marathon, where she set a personal record of 2:19:44.

Swiss Athletics was informed this week that the regular naturalization process has been completed and Helen Bekele is now a Swiss citizen. Since she has never competed for Ethiopia in international championships under World Athletics rules, nothing stands in the way of Switzerland’s participation in major events. Swiss Athletics expects World Athletics to officially confirm the country change soon.

This Sunday, Bekele will participate in the Osaka Marathon in Japan, where she wants to run a top time again after her victory last year. (SDA)
