Three-time road world champion Peter Sagan must undergo heart surgery in Italy on Friday.
The 34-year-old Slovak, who is ending his mountain bike career after retiring as a road professional and aims to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris next summer, was found to have an unusually high heart rate on Sunday after a mountain bike race near Valencia.
His heart rate monitor repeatedly showed readings of more than 200 beats per minute, something that had never happened before in his career. The maximum value was always 190. A series of tests would have confirmed the episodes of abnormal tachycardia during intense exercise. After the surgery, Sagan should be able to return to training in the near future.
To qualify for the Summer Games, Sagan must collect a large number of UCI points. Only the top 19 countries get a starting place for the Olympic cross-country race, Slovakia is currently only in 38th place (SDA).
