The fans’ protests were worth it. As the German Football League (DFL) announced on Wednesday, the planned deal with investors has failed. The association’s board decided this unanimously during its extraordinary meeting in Frankfurt.
“A successful continuation of the process no longer seems possible given current developments,” said Hans-Joachim Watzke, spokesperson for the DFL Presidium. Fan scenes in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga have protested en masse against the deal with various actions in recent weeks. The ultras repeatedly interrupted the game by throwing objects such as tennis balls, and some games were even on the verge of being abandoned. For the fans, the entry of an investor represents football as a commercialized product and therefore everything they despise.
“In the middle of a trial”
In mid-December, the 36 clubs from the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga voted on the entry of a billionaire investor and gave the green light thanks to a two-thirds majority (24 clubs voted yes). This gave DFL management permission to negotiate an investment agreement with interested parties. Just over two months later, the deal fell through.
“German professional football is in the midst of a test that is causing major disputes not only within the league association between the clubs, but also within the clubs between professionals, coaches, club managers, regulatory bodies, general assemblies and fan communities. The progress of the game and therefore the integrity of the competition are increasingly affected,” Watzke continues.
