In a long and successful career, only this title was missing: Valtteri Filppula (39) fought with Servette to win the Champions Hockey League against Skelleftea (3:2). Thanks to this trophy, the man with 1,222 NHL games closes one of the few holes in his record.

The Finn has already won the Stanley Cup (2008), the Olympic Games (2022), the World Cup (2022) and the National League (2023). “Of course I feel very good,” says Filppula, whose career became unique on Tuesday evening: he became the first ice hockey player to become a member of the “Quintuple Gold Club”.

A goal achieved

First Valtteri Filppula analyzes the game: “I am very happy with the game. I think we played well – just like the opponent on the other side. It was a close game. I’m happy we won.”

While still on the ice, the northerner takes a few seconds to chat with us during the festivities. And especially to emphasize the importance of this competition for the GSHC this season: «When you play for something, you always want to win and get the best out of it. It was a forced goal and I’m happy I achieved it.”

Now he focuses on the championship

For a player with his experience, the question arises whether Filppula still gets nervous before a match in which a title is at stake. “I certainly slept well last night,” he laughs confidently: “When you get older, you need as much rest as possible.” And what was it like on the day of the match itself? “There is always a bit of nervousness,” said the Finn. “But it is mixed with excitement. I prepared as always and I’m glad it went well.”

At the age of 39, Filppula may have written one of the final chapters of his incredible career. Does the Finn have a goal before hanging up his skates? “The Champions League was just one goal for this season,” he answers, making it clear: “The second goal is to do as well as possible in the competition. That’s what we have to focus on from now on.”

Even when celebrating, the Finn with a unique career has both feet on the ground and is already thinking about Saturday’s away match in Bern.
