A week ago, Geneva captain Noah Rod (27) crashed into the boards and injured his shoulder. His season ended prematurely. He knew immediately that the Champions Hockey League final against Skelleftea would take place without him. “In the ambulance I told the boys to get the trophy,” he said after his team’s victory.

Rod experienced the match, which Geneva won 3-2, from the stands – very close and at the same time very far away from his teammates. “Surprisingly, I’m doing well,” he says. «I knew in the morning that we would win. I don’t know how to explain it, but the boys seemed very focused and very calm at the same time.”

Even when Skelleftea reduced the score to 2:3 and the pressure increased, Rod did not become stressed. He remains confident. “It’s a final,” he laughs. ‘We knew it wouldn’t be easy. On the other hand, they played very well, but I never really doubted or feared.” In April, his team won a decisive match in the seventh game of the play-off final against Biel – with Rod on the ice. “Or I play or not, ultimately doesn’t matter,” he explains. “What counts is the result: that Geneva wins.”

Does success in the Champions Hockey League have a different meaning for him? «When you are an athlete, every title is important. I have been fighting to win prizes with Geneva-Servette for eleven years. Ever since I was a little boy, I dreamed of winning a trophy with this club and now it’s two in a row.”

At the trophy presentation, Rod is invited by alternate captain Tanner Richard to lift the trophy with him. “That shows his class,” says Rod. «It’s a very strong moment for me because we’ve been playing together for a long time. It is a great honor that he asked me to accompany him.”

When he receives his medal, Rod will be one of the most praised Genevans. And when he celebrates for the fans, he is also the one who gets the most applause. Proof that the Geneva captain’s importance isn’t just about his impact on the ice. The fact that Geneva-Servette won may have been partly due to even the smallest boost from the incapacitated striker.
