In November 2022, Italian former professional cyclist Davide Rebellin (1971–2022) died in a tragic accident. He was riding his bicycle on the road when he was rammed by a truck. As a later video shows, the driver stopped and looked at him for a moment, but then drove away, leaving Rebellin to his fate. It was only seven months later that the now 63-year-old German truck driver turned himself in to the police. Now he has been convicted.
The driver of the accident agreed with Italian justice to a prison sentence of three years and eleven months. It is still unclear whether he will have to serve this in prison. The defense is demanding that the entire case be imposed as house arrest. According to Italian media, the final decision will be made on March 11. Rebellin’s family had already reimbursed approximately 783,000 francs through insurance.
Rebellin had only ended his career shortly before the fatal accident. He specialized in one-day races and in 2002 won the three classics Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège within a week. He also won stages several times on tours, for example in the Giro d’Italia in 1996 and the Tour of Switzerland in 1997. It was not only his successes that made the headlines. Rebellin’s Olympic silver, which he won in Beijing in 2008, was later revoked due to doping. (beer)
