The nerves of the Norwegian ski jumping team are on edge. Despite the victory of Johann Forfang (28) in Willingen (De) two weeks ago and the podium place of Marius Lindvik (25) in Lake Placid (USA), the athletes are calling on their head coach Alexander Stöckl (in office since 2011) to resign steps . They made this request in a joint letter of complaint to the association.
One of the many criticisms of Stöckl is the leadership with which the coach lost the athletes. The athletes have been dissatisfied with this for a long time. Stöckl’s lack of motivation is also mentioned. Ski jumper Forfang confirmed this in the Norwegian media: “We can say that we have sent a letter to the committee together. It’s not about results. The point is that it cannot wait until spring, because from today we want to put together a new team for the season.”
The association has been under pressure for some time
The Norwegian association has been making the news for quite some time. Most recently due to a sponsorship dispute, financial cuts for the athletes and an internal power struggle that resulted in the resignation of current sports director Clas Brede Brathen after more than twenty years in office.
Brathen, who will leave the association after the Ski Flying World Championships in March, wants to smooth things over between athletes and coaches. He says we should sit down together and sort things out. “I think it pays to talk together and get a good process going.”
Stöckl has been in office for more than ten years
However, an enlightening conversation will have to wait. The counted Stöckl recently – for unknown reasons – did not even participate in the competitions. Instead, assistant coach Magnus Brevig was responsible for the athletes. After all, Stöckl said in an interview with Norwegian radio that he wanted to know what was really going on and that he wanted to sit down with the athletes soon.
The end of the Stöckl era would come as a surprise. Under his leadership, the Norwegians have celebrated countless successes over the past thirteen years. Most recently, Halvor Egner Granerud won the Four Hills Tournament and overall World Cup victory. (par)
