Former sports director Marco Streller (42) has been on the FC Basel sports committee for more than 100 days. And he does what you do in sports committees. For example, talk about transfers. Plan the shift. Looking to the future. To decide. Weigh the points that speak for and against signing a player.
In the case of Albian Ajeti (26), at first glance there are not many arguments for a transfer in January. The striker has been waiting to play since early December; the 26-year-old has played just 55 minutes in total for Turkish Super League team Gaziantep this season. Things that were of course discussed in the sports committee. It is not without reason that the Basel team immediately raised a major question mark about Ajeti’s condition in a strikingly open press release.
Ajeti was considered Streller’s successor
Yet the transfer takes place. According to Blick-Infos, this is also because Marco Streller campaigned to register his former protégé. That’s not surprising. Because the duo has a long-standing success story in common.
When Ajeti made his debut for FCB in the spring of 2014 at the age of 17, he was considered a possible successor to Streller in Basel’s attacking center. When the FCB legend played his last match in Joggeli a year later and experienced one of the most emotional moments of his career, he was substituted for Ajeti shortly before the end.
Together as players the two won two championship titles. And even after Streller’s active career ended, their paths crossed. In October 2017, the then sports director brought Ajeti from FC St.Gallen back to the Rhine Knee. He thanks you for your trust, immediately becomes top scorer and was involved in 64 goals in 96 games for Basel. And he earned FCB almost 12 million in transfer income in the summer of 2019 when he moved to West Ham United.
Streller: “A joint decision”
Since then the striker, who first moved to Celtic Glasgow and then went on loan to Sturm Graz, has not achieved much. But the potential would undoubtedly be there. Streller must also be aware of this. Even though he does not want to speak publicly about FCB players at Blick’s request.
The FCB legend also does not want to know anything about the fact that he was the driving force behind the Ajeti transfer: “In the sports committee we make decisions democratically, and together the decisions are also communicated to the outside world. Neither David Degen nor I penetrate somewhere. It was a mutual decision to sign Albi. Out of conviction.” The obligation therefore had nothing to do with him, says Streller. According to the former sports director, who exercised influence and how remains internal.
