She complains during training, she ends up on the podium in the race: Mayfly Flury? That’s slow enough

Lara here, Lara there, Lara everywhere. Most fans in Crans-Montana USA only have eyes for Gut-Behrami. You almost forget that Jasmine Flury is in second place on the first descent – she is exactly as fast as Cornelia Hütter (31, Austria). “Last night I still had a headache. And at first I noticed that the punch was missing. Then I tried to block everything out – that clearly worked,” says the 30-year-old happily.

Flury surprised himself, placing 18 and 25 in training were one thing. Another thing: the woman from Graubünden was anything but satisfied with the slopes. The snow is too soft, the finish slope is not World Cup worthy and the last jump is completely unnecessary. “Something had to happen after the first training. But I am aware that it is not easy for the organizers, it is just way too hot. Anyway, today I was happy that the goal jump was not made,” said Flury.

Bad preparation? Whistle well!

In fact, Flury once again shows a special quality: just like with her World Cup title a year ago, where she suffered a lot in the preparation, she also performed under poor conditions this time. How is that possible? “Maybe I’ll take the pressure off if everything doesn’t go well before the race. However, I hope this does not become a habit.”

In her eighth World Cup winter, Flury is riding stronger than ever before. She already won in Val d’Isère (Fr) – and now took second place in Crans-Montana. She is fifth in the downhill standings. Does she now feel like she’s shown it to the last few critics who accidentally call her a world champion? ‘Not anymore, no. I think I have now proven what I can do.”

Changes to the ski boots provided more grip

It’s not just Flury himself who has improved enormously compared to the training. No, something was also found in the material. Kästle race director Rainer Nachbaur explains: “We have changed the angle of the ski boot slightly so that Jasmine has more grip.”

The Austrian is happy with Flury’s performance: “She has long since proven that she is not a flash in the pan. At the same time, as a ski company you cannot expect podium finishes in a row – unless you have Shiffrin or Gut-Behrami under contract. We are very glad that Jasmijn is with us.”
