The Swiss national football team is now 19th in the FIFA world rankings. This is a loss of one rank compared to the last update on December 21st.

Senegal passed Switzerland and gained three places. And Iran are applying pressure from behind, the Asian Cup semi-finalists are only five points behind us. Argentina remains at the top, ahead of France and England.

This means that Switzerland scores worse than it has for almost twelve years. In September 2012, the national team, then still under Ottmar Hitzfeld (75), was in 20th place. The European Championship shortly before that was the last major tournament in which Switzerland did not participate.

Switzerland had by far the worst ranking in December 1998, when it was ranked 83rd. Five years earlier they were in third place, which is still the best position the national team has ever achieved.
