Since the beginning of December it has been clear that Vincent Cavin will step down as assistant coach of the Swiss national team. His successor is still waiting. Slowly but surely, time is running out: in just over a month, the national team will meet for the final meeting before the European Championship – including a training camp in Spain and test matches in Denmark and Ireland.

The aim is for Murat Yakins (49), the new first point of contact in the coaching team, to be known. There was contact with several candidates, such as Davide Callà (39) from FC Basel, but he did not receive approval. An exchange also took place with ex-Chelsea coach Roberto Di Matteo (53). And now the following name appears: As ‘Nau’ first reported, discussions are underway with Giorgio Contini (50). This corresponds to the information from Blick. In fact, everything now looks like Contini will actually take over the job at the Swiss Football Association by the summer.

Contini and Yakin? It is a reunion: the two were already a coaching duo at FC Luzern (2011 to 2012). For Contini it was his last interlude as an assistant coach in Central Switzerland, after which he made a name for himself as boss at Vaduz, St. Gallen, Lausanne and GC. Thanks to his multilingualism and playing history as a striker (champion at St. Gallen), he would be the right addition to the defensive specialist Yakin.

What Contini contradicts: he has no international experience, neither as a player nor as a coach, a factor that was ultimately underestimated by his predecessor: ex-Nati assistant Cavin never enjoyed the 100 percent respect of the internationally successful Nati leaders around Xhaka, Akanji and Co Nevertheless: Compared to Cavin, Contini has experience as a head coach and has had success as such, which benefits his position in the national team.

For Contini, who has been without a job since the summer and his voluntary departure from the rankings, the job with the national team is a welcome bridge. From next season he would like to work at a club again as head coach.
