Dean Kukan (30) is missing at the start of the ice hockey year. When the ZSC Lions won in Ambri, he was listed as ill. When he’s still missing almost a week later, you’re surprised. The people of Zurich do not know what he is suffering from. But at least the Nati defender is now ready to be rebuilt in training. The former Columbus Blue Jackets player will make his comeback against Kloten on January 20. Kukan was also there the next day in the second derby defeat within two days. But then he drops out again. The Lions report that he “suffered a relapse.”
The top defender has not been seen since. Now there is hope for him to make his second comeback. “If everything goes according to plan, I should be able to play one of the two games this weekend,” he says. On Friday the Lions host SCB (live stream on Blick), and on Saturday they travel to Rapperswil-Jona. Kukan, who returned to full team training last week, must be carefully integrated into the league’s matchday activities.
But why, apart from a short break, was Kukan sick for about a month and a half? “After Christmas I got pneumonia,” says Kukan. His Swedish wife Jenni and daughters Ella (1) and Tuve (3) also had sex. ‘That was tough. I’ve never experienced anything like this before. After three or four days of fever, I said to myself: this is not normal. The blood tests didn’t look good at all.”

When he recovered from his pneumonia with the help of antibiotics, he returned to the team after a week and a half of training. «After the second game I got some rest. I had bad blood values again and had a fever and body aches for three days. But the lungs were no longer the problem.” He’s got another infection. But they couldn’t figure out what it was.
Now everything looks better, the blood values are within normal limits and Kukan says: “I still have to be careful. We are now taking it day by day and hope that things continue to go well and that there will be no setbacks.” The “only positive” is that it happened now and not in the playoffs. ‘Then there is still plenty of time left to rebuild myself.’ In Kukan’s absence, the Zurich team has already qualified for the play-offs, which start on March 16.
