When Blick met Malorie Blanc (20) during the week, she beamed from ear to ear. No wonder, because the Walliser from Ayent won comfortably at the Junior World Championships: gold in the Super-G, plus silver in the downhill and in the team combination. “I’m so happy, it’s like a dream,” she says.

And today? The dream can turn into a nightmare. Blanc has a bad fall during the second European Cup descent – the first started at 9am, the second at 11am – in Crans-Montana USA. “She was sitting in the back after a jump and the pressure was too much,” her father Alex says on the phone. The result? The cruciate ligament of the left knee may have been torn. The next fall into the net is probably just a consequence of the injury.

Blanc, who has never been seriously injured before, is transported by sled from the slope of Mont Lachaux and taken to hospital in Zurich. Further clarifications follow here. The fact is: her World Cup debut, which she would have made this Sunday during the Super-G in Crans-Montana USA, was canceled.
