Aston Villa sign Emery away from Villarreal and have a successor for Gerrard
Unai Emery has been appointed as the new manager of Aston Villa. The Spaniard takes over from Steven Gerrard, who was sacked by the English club on Thursday. Aston Villa would reportedly pay around €6m to buy out Emery’s contract.
Aston Villa are currently 14th in the Premier League. For Emery, it’s his chance for redemption in English football’s top flight. In 2018, the 50-year-old manager succeeded the successful Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, but had to leave the field after less than a year and a half in London.
He was successful at his later club Villarreal, where the Dutchman Arnaut Danjuma plays. He won the Europa League in 2021 and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League this spring.
Emery is already successful in Europe. He also managed to win the Europa League title three times at another former club, Sevilla. Emery hopes to start work November 1 in connection with his work permit.
