Team Europe is on a mission to take the Laver Cup back into their own hands this year. After two recent defeats against Team World, the team of captain Björn Borg (67) wants to triumph for the fifth time in Berlin (22 to 24 September).
Since November it has been known that Carlos Alcaraz (20, ATP 2) will participate in the show tournament for the first time. Now two more members of the European selection have been announced. These are the two top stars Daniil Medvedev (ATP 3) and Alexander Zverev (26, ATP 6), who faced each other almost two weeks ago in the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
The Russian Medvedev, who celebrates his 28th birthday on Sunday, is participating for the second time. Zverev, on the other hand, will serve for the 5th time and is the Europeans’ record participant in the Laver Cup. The German also brings a good omen: whenever he was there, Team Europe won.
Tennis legend Borg can nominate three more players. But the Swede is already full of confidence: “We are super motivated to take back the title. With Daniil, Sascha (name for Zverev, editor’s note) and Carlos we have an excellent chance of achieving this.” It is not yet known who will participate in the world selection for Captain John McEnroe (64).
