Shakhtar director: ‘Ban Iran from World Cup for supporting war, let Ukraine participate’
Iran should be banned from the upcoming World Cup in Qatar because that country’s regime is complicit in the suffering of Ukrainian citizens. That’s according to Sergei Palkin, general manager of top Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk.
Iran supplies drones to Russia, which the Russians then use in the war in Ukraine. Palkin says it has attacked innocent civilians 250 times.
“It would be a fair decision to bring international attention to a regime that kills its best people at home and helps murder Ukrainians,” Palkin said in a statement. He refers to the violently suppressed freedom demonstrations in Iran.
The Ukrainian giants have reported a day ahead of Shakhtar’s game against Celtic in the Champions League. The government in Kyiv has long accused the Iranian regime of supplying drones and missiles to Moscow. According to the US, there are indications that Iran is directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine.
Ukraine should take Iran’s place, says Shakhtar’s director. The country was eliminated in the play-offs by Wales, who will face Iran at the World Cup in November.
