Sofia Goggia will no longer be racing this winter.

The Ski World Cup has its next injury victim. This time it’s the Italian team. As the “Gazzetta dello Sport” writes, Sofia Goggia (31) was seriously injured in a fall during training. The suspicion: broken tibia and fibula. The season is coming to an early end for the speed specialist, writes the Italian newspaper.

So the scary series continues. Goggia is the 28th athlete to suffer an injury this winter. She joins names like Corinne Suter, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, Petra Vlhova and Alexis Pinturault.

Particularly bitter for the Italian: she is currently the leader in the downhill rankings. With four races to go, she is 89 ahead of her first pursuer, the Austrian Stephanie Venier. Nothing will likely come of the fourth downhill ball in a row and the fifth overall. This winter, Goggia has been on the podium six times, winning one downhill and one super-G.

Seriously injured several times

For Goggia it is not the first serious injury in her career. In 2013 she tore her cruciate ligament, after which she repeatedly suffered from knee problems. Yet she never gave up and won Olympic gold in the downhill in 2018. Then the injury witch hit her several times.

Before the 2018/19 season she broke her ankle, after which she fell several times with devastating consequences. Fractures of the tibial plateau and fibula and a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament were added to her medical record. Last winter she broke her hand in a fall, had surgery that afternoon and won the next day. (beer)
