The arms of Hansruedi Führer (86, played 78 games for the Hoppers) keep going up in the air. What was shown on the field did not satisfy the former defender. ‘That’s too weak. There are too many inaccuracies in the GC, too much fragmentary!”, he says.

Fuhrer watches the second side derby of the season against Winti together with other ranking legends and close friends. “Bigi” Meier, Raimondo Ponte, Adi Noventa, Roger Wehrli and Roger Berbig are there and watch the 0-1 defeat against Winterthur. Like Führer, his colleagues also suffer. “Could be better,” says Noventa. He led Winti back to the Senate as a coach in 1984.

Winti collective “stands solid”

Forty years later, he is looking at Letzigrund’s first win since its revival (in 2022 under Alex Frei). It is a deserved, if somewhat fortunate, success. The only goal is scored in the tired staircase after a commotion in the Hoppers penalty area. Ltaief keeps calm and overview in the chaos, stands correctly on the penalty spot and scores 1-0.

The Tunisian and his team, who thanks to the three points are now within two points of sixth place and therefore of the Champions Group, would hardly be considered that high before the season. But coach Patrick Frame’s team shows why they are right there: not thanks to individual players like others in their squad. The collective makes a difference for the residents of Eulachstadt.

Legends leave shortly before the final whistle

This is also stronger against GC. “They are doing a solid job, not allowing much and defending together. Nowadays things are different in the rankings, there are no leading figures!”, says legend Führer.

Due to the 0-1 defeat, the Hoppers, who were only one point behind Winti before the side match, miss out on the top six in the Super League. What is much more disappointing than the defeat is GC’s poor performance. ‘That wasn’t a good match. Miserable. But that’s just how football is sometimes,” Führer summarizes.

Colleague Noventa left a little earlier than the now 86-year-old: “Sniff!”, he said. Shortly after him and a few minutes before the end of the match, Ponte, Meier, Wehrli and Berbig also disappeared. Führer is the last to leave with seconds to go. “This result will likely remain the same.” The legend turned out to be right.
