Quo vadis, Michael Lang? In mid-November, the FCB right back came on as a substitute in the final phase of the 4-1 defeat against Servette. The 32-year-old has not played a single minute since. But that’s not all: in the 0-1 home defeat against Lugano, Lang did not even make the selection. While jogging he has to sit in the stands next to new signing Albian Ajeti (26).
Fabio Celestini (46) has only positive words about his bench warmer: “I have a very good relationship with Michi. His attitude is fantastic,” explains the FCB coach, but continues to waive his services. “I can only list 20 players and in the end I have to choose the best team,” Celestini said.
“He does everything possible”
Two right backs, Mohammed Dräger (27) and Kevin Rüegg (25), have been out injured for weeks. When two other defenders, captain Fabian Frei (35) and Dominik Schmid (25), were suspended against Winterthur (3-1), Celestini preferred to sign 16-year-old Marvin Akahomen at left back.
So they have been waiting in vain for a new chance for nine games. The long-time top performer does not seem to be able to change his situation. “He can only continue as before. He does everything possible,” says Celestini.
Will there still be a GC change?
Yet there is not even enough for the replacement bench against Lugano. Although Lang still has a contract with FCB until the summer of 2025, his days appear to be numbered after a total of 218 games in red and blue. The 31-time international had already received an offer from his former club GC in the summer, but decided to stay in Basel.
At the latest after he is banished to the stands, Lang will think about his future again. Within Switzerland, a change is possible until February 15. At FCB they will not put any obstacles in the way of the right back. To make room for Lang’s neighbor Ajeti in the stands, the team from Basel still has to remove one name from the contingent list.
