It would be the Formula 1 transfer of the decade! Record world champion Lewis Hamilton (39) is about to move to Ferrari, reports the renowned British specialist portal motorsport.com.
The Briton could therefore only drive the Mercedes in 2024 and then – instead of giving up – take up the really big challenge again and start for the Reds.
As the British write, negotiations between Hamilton and the Italians have already progressed. Nothing has been signed yet, but the mega deal could apparently close this week.
That would be extremely early, as Hamilton would have to compete for the Silver Arrows all season long. And with every poor performance by the seven-time world champion, his motivation was questioned by the media.
Mystery about the two-year contract with Mercedes
It was previously believed that the 103-time GP winner’s most recent Mercedes contract would run into 2025 after 2024. But the second year is probably just an option that Hamilton will not take advantage of.
Hamilton at Ferrari? There have been repeated rumors of a change in recent years. But the Briton won his debut title in the McLaren and moved to the Silver Arrow in 2014, completing a string of victories and a further six world titles.
However, Hamilton has been winless in the Mercedes for two years. Has he lost faith that his team will get better again? Now he could try to break the dominance of Max Verstappen (26) in the Ferrari in 2025. Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur (55) already worked with Hamilton as a youngster; the then great talent won the GP2 title in the Frenchman’s team in 2006.
At Maranello, Hamilton would be a teammate of Charles Leclerc (26), who recently signed a long-term extension – and who is chasing his first title in years.
Leclerc’s current teammate Carlos Sainz (29) will leave Ferrari at the end of 2024 and will probably end up at Sauber in Hinwil as the future Audi factory driver.
