At the end of the year, Jürg Stahl (56) is running out of time as president of Swiss Olympic. The former National Councilor (SVP) has been on the board of the sports association for sixteen years, the statutes do not allow more. We are looking for a successor to the former Turner, who has been president since 2017.
So it’s high time we started talking about names. “I can imagine the executive committee,” Swiss ski president Urs Lehmann (54) is quoted in the “Aargauer Zeitung”. “I feel very connected to the sport. In the context of the Olympic project, my focus has changed. It showed me what we can successfully achieve together, beyond individual associations. And that makes you want more.”
Lehmann is not yet a candidate
Is someone throwing their hat into the ring? It doesn’t happen that quickly. According to information from Blick, Lehmann is actually considered the new head of the umbrella organization. But when asked, he also says: “I haven’t thought about it very specifically yet.” This means: Lehmann still needs a few weeks – and whether he will then stand for election is entirely open.
The entrepreneur and 1993 downhill world champion, president of the ski association since 2008, has repeatedly been considered a candidate for the presidency of the International Ski Association (FIS). He was defeated in 2021 by the Swedish-British entrepreneur Johan Eliasch (61) and is one of his fiercest critics. Two weeks ago there was a scandal when the Swiss was accused of “unethical behavior” by the world association.
Will Heusler suddenly become an option?
The man from Aargau is not the only prominent name offered for the Swiss Olympic Presidium. Former FCB boss Bernhard Heusler (60), who as co-president of Schweizer Sporthilfe now has a network in Swiss sports outside of football, is also mentioned as a possible successor to Stahl.
But does Heusler want to expose himself again in public office? The Basel native recently rejected himself as a candidate for president of the Swiss Football Association, although the Swiss football league with boss Claudius Schäfer was very keen to nominate him to succeed Dominique Blanc (74) as SFV president in 2025.
