First race, first win. The young Swiss skiers launch the Junior World Championships in Portes du Soleil (Fr) perfectly. Livio Hiltbrand (20) wins gold in the descent. If he is still a touch behind the leading Italian Gregorio Bernardi (20) at the top, Hiltbrand makes the difference at the bottom.

Last year the Bernese Oberlander reached the podium in the downhill. He then came third. Now he can call himself world junior champion in the highest discipline. It is his second gold medal; he triumphed in the Super-G in 2023. Silver goes to Bernardi, his Italian compatriot Max Perathoner (21) is happy with bronze. He is five hundredths faster than the second best Swiss. Lenz Hächler (20) comes in an ungrateful fourth place.

The strong Swiss result was rounded off by Philipp Kälin (19) in sixth place and Denis Corthay (20) in eleventh place. Thomas Zippert (20) turns 29.

Blanc gets hit late

Just like Hächler, Malorie Blanc (20) is also unlucky. Thanks to a strong drive, she takes the lead with starting number 8. And has long looked like the new junior downhill world champion. Until the Austrian Victoria Olivier (19) arrives with starting number 30 – and snatches the gold from under her nose within a hundredth of a second.

However, another athlete can no longer get past the duo, Blanc can look forward to silver and thus her first medal at a World Junior Championship. The bronze goes to the Finnish Rosa Pohjolainen (20). With Laura Huber (18) in fifth place and Nora Guggisberg (19) in ninth, two more Swiss women are in the top 10. Defending champion Stefanie Grob (20) is in twelfth place and Isabella Pedrazzi (19) in 18th place.

Farquet is out

Annie Farquet (19) will not be hunting for medals at the Junior World Championships. As Swiss-Ski announced, she suffered a knee injury in a fall during slalom training on Monday morning. It is canceled until further notice. In her place, Chiara Lanz (19) is now traveling to France. (beer)
