Arsenal have lost two points to low-flying Southampton in the Premier League title race. The league game, which lies between Arsenal’s two Europa League encounters with PSV, ended 1-1.

The leader dominated the early stages with opportunities for Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli. Granit Xhaka was accurate, chasing the ball hard past goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu. After that, Southampton put nothing in the way of the Londoners.

Bezunu saved Southampton before half-time by blocking a hard shot from Gabriel Jesus. Also in the second half Gabriel Jesus remained a plague for Southampton that more came of it.

Sudden compensation

With 25 minutes to go, the home side came back into play with a Stuart Armstrong goal. After a skillful cross pass from Mohamed Elyounoussi, Armstrong was able to push the ball past Aaron Ramsdale. Odegaard then also thought he could score for Arsenal but his goal was disallowed.

Arsenal remain in the lead, two points clear of Manchester City. Third-placed Tottenham Hotspur lost 2-1 to Newcastle and are now three points adrift of City.

Mikel Arteta’s team visit Eindhoven in the group stage of the Europa League on Thursday.

Liverpool, opponents of Ajax in the Champions League, lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Jurgen Klopp’s side haven’t won a single game in the competition this season.

Ten Hag right, Haaland scores again

Erik Ten Hag later played with Manchester United in a 1-1 draw at Chelsea on Saturday. Cristiano Ronaldo received a disciplinary suspension for the game in which both goals were scored after the 87th minute.
