The greatest Swiss handball player hangs up his boots! Andy Schmid (40) ends his exceptional career. He announced this on Instagram on Tuesday. Schmid leaves as a five-time Bundesliga MVP, two-time German champion and cup winner. He also became champion and cup winner in Switzerland twice.
The three international matches at the European Championship in Germany that ended on Sunday were Schmid’s last appearances on a handball court. “I have invested so much mentally and physically for the European Championships that now is a good time to retire,” says Schmid.
After the European Championship came the analysis
Actually, his contract would have run until the summer. Now he is taking early retirement. “It was always clear that after the European Championship I would sit down with the club and reassess the situation,” said Schmid. Those responsible at HC Kriens-Luzern were always kept informed of his plans.
By retiring early, Schmid will have more time to prepare for his next assignment. He will succeed Michael Suter as Swiss national coach this summer. Suter will still be on the sidelines for the 2025 World Cup play-off matches against Slovenia in May.
