FC Bayern has apparently finalized its plans to commemorate the late football emperor Franz Beckenbauer. According to CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, a monument to Beckenbauer in front of the Allianz Arena next to that for iconic striker Gerd Müller and the renaming of a street are being considered.
«The curve has the same plan as Gerd Müller. If you look at the monument in honor of Gerd on the esplanade in front of the Allianz Arena: Franz fits in well there,” Munich’s Merkur/tz quoted a statement from Dreesen from a fan club visit to Westerheim.
The initiative for the monument already came from the Munich supporters of “Bomber” Müller. Dreesen explicitly praised this in the Beckenbauer case, but also spoke about the club’s mind games. Discussions are already underway with the city about the renaming of Werner-Heisenenberg-Allee in the stadium in the north of Munich.
The widow must give permission
“The Allianz Arena at Franz-Beckenbauer-Allee No. 5 – that would be sensational,” said Dreesen. Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) had already reported in the days after Beckenbauer’s death on January 7 about the plan to name a street in the Bavarian capital after the Munich native.
However, the plans still need to overcome a major hurdle before they can be implemented. Dreesen wants to hear their ideas when he meets Beckenbauer’s old companions and his widow Heidi on February 1. If she agrees, Bayern’s and the fans’ plans can be put into practice. (AFP)
