Things are not going well for Reto Schmidiger at the World Cup at the moment. In the three slaloms this season, the man from Nidwalden has had one failure in the first run (Kitzbühel) and one in the second (Schladming). In addition, there was the night slalom in Madonna di Campiglio (It), where he did not reach the second round.

In his private life, however, the 31-year-old is on cloud nine. Because, as Blick heard, Schmidiger became a father on January 22 – two days before his performance in Schladming. The boy’s name is Nino; Schmidiger’s wife Annina gave birth to him in the early morning hours.

Self-financed fight for return to the World Cup

The two have been married since 2019 and companions from the ski circus were also present at the big wedding party in his hometown of Hergiswil. Marco Odermatt (26), Justin Murisier (32) and Ramon Zenhäuser (31) congratulated the bridal couple.

Unlike his ski colleagues, Schmidiger has not had an easy time of late. In the spring of 2022, he was removed from the selection by Swiss-Ski. To keep his World Cup dream alive, he finances his travels from his own pocket. The results are still a long time coming, but Schmidiger has managed to return to the skiing elite.
