Disappointment for the host of the European Handball Championship.

Host country Germany missed out on the bronze medal at the European Championship finals and thus a direct ticket to the Olympic Games in Paris next summer.

The team of national coach Alfred Gislason (64) lost 31:34 to defending champion Sweden in the match for third place in Cologne.

The Germans gave up the game in the first half and trailed 12:18 at halftime. Then they turned up the heat and came within one goal in the 54th minute (29:30). Ultimately, the mortgage is too heavy.

Match winner for the Scandinavians is goalkeeper Andreas Palicka (37), who achieved a sensational defense percentage of 45 percent with 19 saves. The Swede Felix Claar (27) and the German Renars Uscins (21) were each successful eight times. (SDA/mbi)
