Benjamin Kololli (31) wore the FC Zürich shirt 92 times. Logically, his past is an issue after moving to FCB. But one thing has already been resolved after his first 13 competitive minutes in the Joggeli. With his lob, the winger shoots his new club to their first victory against YB since June 2020.
‘I’m at a loss for words. That was perhaps one of the best feelings of my career,” says Kololli about his first FCB goal. There has been a lot of talk in recent weeks about his return to Switzerland. “But that never interested me. Ultimately, it is the performance on the field that counts,” said de Vaudois.
Kololli is not allowed to celebrate with Celestini
And she votes against YB. When the former Kosovo international was substituted shortly before the end, there was applause from the Basel crowd. Kololli admits he wasn’t sure how he would be received by the FCB fans. “Wow, the fans were great,” he enthuses.
Kololli regrets that he could not celebrate his debut goal in Basel with Fabio Celestini (48). After his yellow-red card against FCZ (0-0), he has to watch the match from the box at St. Jakob Park. It was only after the match that the FCB coach and his new signing met briefly. «I thanked Fabio. It was because of him that I also ended up in Basel,” says Kololli.
FCB-Rueda worked as a car dealer
This also applies to FCB assistant coach Martin Rueda (61), who represents the suspended Celestini on the sidelines. “I was looking for a new job and asked Fabio if I could use him as a reference,” says Rueda. “He then asked me if I wanted to become his assistant immediately. Of course I immediately said yes.”
The Zurich native had actually already wrapped up the football business. In December 2016, the former YB coach at FC Wil was fired after twelve games. “I wanted to do something completely different after that,” he reflects. The former national player then worked for a few months as head of used items at the Binelli Group in Adliswil. “I didn’t think it was possible that I would be on the sidelines again in a match like this,” Rueda reveals.
During his time at FCZ, Kololli hardly expected to play for rivals from Basel – and win the hearts of FCB fans in just 13 minutes of the home game.
